Liberation. Revelation. Retaliation.
On the Day of Sentience, wherein our great Lord Aku gained the ability to communicate, and developed a true character and personality unique to himself,
the turning point of history, the Birth of our treasured Master...such a day requires honor and observance.
To the immortal Master, the sorrowful shogun, our dark deliverer;
may your endlessly inspiring and wondrous existence fuel artistic tribute for many more years to come.
"Birth of Evil" is the best episode in the entire series. The two-part story earned Samurai Jack
an emmy and showcased the fantastic skill of the writers, animators, and directors behind the show. It's truly the best effort of the talented crew and it's clear.
But this episode is important to Samurai Jack
for another reason.
It reveals to us the creation of Aku, who is the reason for everything that happens on the screen. And it trumped every guess to his origins the fans had created prior to its air...
Aku was not formerly human, nor was he some generic Hellbeast who escaped to cause trouble. He finally gained an official history, which explained nearly everything in the series.
He was a formless being, chased to Earth by divine assailants, that became Aku after millions of years of isolation and rejection. "Birth of Evil" is not literally the beginning of Aku. It is the process by which this entity becomes and personifies "Evil". It is the reason Aku is Aku and why he does everything he does...
For these reasons, the importance of this particular special cannot be ignored. August 17th is Sentience Day--Ten years ago, Aku's self-awareness, and by extension the reasons for all his hatred and malice, became known to the world.
This may well be the closest thing to a birthday our adorable demonic overlord has.

<3Ironically, August 17 is also the Indonesian Independence Day. Why is this significant?
-Indonesia declared independence from Japan.
-"Aku" means "I" or "Me" in Indonesian...
-"Birth of Evil" is about Aku freeing himself from Japan to begin his own reign...aired August 17.
-Kind of stupid but FUCKING WEIRD AND KINDA COOL SO SHUT UP
